Reed Removal from Dams & Ponds in South Africa

Reeds are one of the most persistent threats to dam health in South Africa. Left unchecked, they spread aggressively along shorelines and across shallow areas, reducing water capacity, blocking irrigation inlets, degrading water quality, and eliminating habitat for fish and waterfowl.

Dart provides professional reed removal services for farms, game reserves, golf courses, and residential estates nationwide. We use purpose-built amphibious excavators and long-reach machines to extract reeds root-and-all, the only way to prevent rapid regrowth. No chemicals. Minimal damage to banks or surrounding areas.

Amphibious Excavator Removing Reeds

Why reeds are a serious problem

  • They spread via underground rhizomes - cutting above water makes regrowth faster
  • A dense reed stand can consume 20–40% of a dam's water surface within 3–5 years
  • Blocked inlets reduce irrigation capacity and flood overflow systems
  • Reed decay depletes oxygen in the water, harming fish and aquatic life
  • Dense reeds create ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes and other pests

How Dart removes reeds

We assess every site before choosing the right removal method. Most reed removal projects use one or a combination of the following:

  • Amphibious excavators - operate from inside the water, extracting reeds with full root systems from soft, marshy, or submerged terrain where standard machines cannot go
  • Long-reach excavators - reach up to 16 metres across the water surface, extracting reeds from steep banks, wide dams, and ecologically sensitive areas without disturbing the surrounding land
  • Mechanical cutting and collection - for surface reed control in areas requiring a lighter approach

All extracted material is removed from the site. We do not use herbicides or chemical treatments - our methods are safe for fish, birdlife, livestock, and irrigation water.

 Ongoing reed maintenance

Reed removal is not a once-off job. Roots left in the sediment will regrow, and new seeds enter from upstream or via birds. Dart offers annual dam management plans that include scheduled reed monitoring and maintenance - catching regrowth early before it becomes a costly full removal again

Frequently asked questions

Here are some common questions about reed removal

The most effective method is mechanical extraction using amphibious or long-reach excavators to remove reeds root-and-all from the sediment. Cutting alone encourages faster regrowth. Combined with regular monitoring, mechanical removal gives the best long-term results without chemicals.

Most reed removal projects take 1–5 days depending on the extent of growth and dam size. Dart can assess your site and provide a project timeline at no charge.

Yes. Dart's mechanical methods do not use any chemicals and are designed to minimise disturbance to aquatic life and the surrounding environment.
